Gold Panning in the Classroom
Within the 75 minute workshop Yukon Dan highlights:

7) Where and how to find gold in the rivers and creeks today.

8) Students will get "hands on" experiences relating to valuables objects such as goldnuggets, gold jewellery, vials containing gold flakes from different creeks or rivers, and an explanation about their size, colors and mineral content.

9) A goldpanning workshop, where the students pan for gold.

10) How gold is valued and why it is different colors.

Yukon Dan has the students divided into three work stations, which are rotated so each student has the opportunity to participate in each one.

I) Panning for gold then view gold exhibit.

II) Grades 1-2 color a picture of gold miner. Grades 3-12 do a word search or memory sheet of questions about what Yukon Dan talked about at the beginning of his presentation.

III) Separate gold, garnets, silver and quartz from magnetite (blacksand) by using a magnet.

I can have three presentations per day with up to thirty-six students in each class. I charge $6.00 per student. Please talk to your fellow teachers to let them know I'll be at your school so maybe I can do a presentation for them to!
